Deepan Budlakoti
Deepan Budlakoti is an Ottawa-born man who had his Canadian citizenship stripped in 2010.〔Justice for Deepan website, ("Chronology" ).〕 Although the Federal government of Canada alleges that Budlakoti is not a Canadian citizen, he holds no other citizenship and has, therefore, been left in legal limbo.〔Globe and Mail, ("Editorial" ), 20 December 2012.〕 Technically, he has been given a deportation order to India but India has failed to recognize him as a citizen. His case has captured domestic and international attention as it pertains to questions of citizenship, statelessness, and deportation.〔Canadian Civil Liberties Association ("Deepan Budlakoti, Statelessness & Citizenship" ).〕
==Background==
The federal Government of Canada alleges that Mr. Budlakoti was born at a time when his parents were working as cleaning staff for the Indian Embassy.〔Koring, Paul, ("Would-be deportee pleads: 'I'm a Canadian'" ), Globe and Mail, 23 October 2011.〕 Section 3(2) of the Citizenship Act of Canada states that children of diplomats and their staff, when born in Canada, are not entitled to Canadian citizenship.〔Government of Canada ("Citizenship Act" ).〕 However, after his birth, Budlakoti was issued a passport and an Ontario birth certificate. He was only informed of this “error” when he was 20 years old.
